A rare jellyfish with a distinctive red cross-shaped stomach, named the St. George's cross medusa, has been discovered 2,664 feet below the Pacific Ocean's surface near Japan's Ogasawara Islands. The jellyfish, transparent with a bright red cross on its stomach, was found inside the Sumisu caldera, a hydrothermally active volcano. This unique species, S. pagesi, has only been spotted twice, and its unusual traits, including a potential never-before-seen type of venom, make it valuable for genetic research. The researchers hope to protect the area and its marine life from potential commercial development due to its rich mineral resources.
