England's Hangman Sandstone Formation has been identified as the site of the world's oldest forest, dating back 390 million years, surpassing the previous record held by New York state. Fossilized cladoxylopsid trees, related to ferns and horsetails, were discovered in the Middle Devonian formation, along with evidence of other ancient flora and trackways of small arthropods. The findings shed light on the impact of early forests on Earth's landscapes and biosphere, marking the onset of tree-driven changes. The study is published in the Journal of the Geological Society.
