At least 40 people have died across nine states due to winter storms and cold since January 12, with another round of extreme cold and snow expected to hit the central and eastern US. Freezing rain and wind in the Pacific Northwest have caused power outages and dangerous travel conditions, while Buffalo, New York, faces snowy conditions with up to 3 feet of localized snowfall. Harsh cold and snow are set to return across the north-central and eastern US, with wind chills plunging to dangerous levels and another round of snow overspreading portions of the Midwest and East. The Northwest is experiencing a double whammy of ice and snow, with at least seven deaths in the Portland, Oregon area and severe weather persisting.
