"Colorado Avalanche Closes Highways, Buries Cars, and Causes Major Detour"

Colorado experienced dangerously cold temperatures and heavy snowfall over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, leading to high avalanche danger and the closure of U.S. Highway 40 at Berthoud Pass. Avalanche mitigation crews have been working to clear the snow, but ongoing snow slides and the forecast of another storm have maintained very dangerous avalanche conditions across the western slope. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has been using heavy equipment to mitigate avalanches on Berthoud Pass while the road remains closed, and travel in or below avalanche terrain is not recommended.
