Poppy Seed Bagels Cause Legal Trouble for New Moms and Hospitals

Two new mothers in New Jersey are suing hospitals after they tested positive for drugs due to eating bagels with poppy seeds before giving birth. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed lawsuits against Hackensack University Medical Center and Virtua Vorhees Hospital on behalf of the mothers, claiming that false test results led to the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP) being notified. The mothers were subjected to investigations and emotional trauma, but subsequent tests came back negative and the allegations were deemed unfounded.
