DOJ urges court to let ICE surge in Minnesota, rebuffing state’s bid to block crackdown

The Department of Justice asked a federal judge to reject Minnesota’s bid to block the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, arguing federal law preempts state authority and labeling the suit an “absurdity” that would undermine federal supremacy. Minnesota and the Twin Cities had sued last week over the surge of federal immigration agents into the state, calling it a federal invasion. The DOJ is also appealing a judge’s order restricting how federal agents respond to peaceful protesters as demonstrations continue, including a church interruption in St. Paul tied to an ICE official. President Trump criticized the protesters on Truth Social. The court will consider Minnesota’s expedited request, with a response due Thursday. Separately, the DOJ says it is investigating the protest; the Pentagon has ordered 1,500 active-duty troops to standby, and the Minnesota National Guard has been mobilized.
