Dick Durbin, the Democratic chair of the Senate judiciary committee, accused the Supreme Court of being a panel of "nine justices who believe they are exempt from the basic standards of disclosure." He is leading a push for Supreme Court ethics reform amid growing criticism of conservative justice Clarence Thomas, whose judicial record is under scrutiny after he became embroiled in scandal over taking undeclared gifts from a Republican mega-donor. Durbin invited Chief Justice John Roberts to testify before the judiciary committee on May 2 to explain how he intended to handle ethics reform.
