Michigan Health Official Alarmed by Reports from Wayne Juvenile Jail

Reports from state employees placed inside the Wayne County juvenile jail in Michigan are "highly concerning," according to the state's top health official. Elizabeth Hertel said children at the facility may not have access to clean clothing, regular meals, or adequate time outside their rooms. The comments come amid an ongoing Free Press investigation into the facility's poor living conditions, overcrowding, and understaffing. Wayne County Executive Warren Evans declared a public health emergency at the facility on Tuesday, calling on the state to help alleviate overcrowding. A state Senate subcommittee will hold a special hearing on the crisis at the facility on Wednesday.
