Maryland Elections Board Member Resigns Following Jan. 6 Indictment
A Republican member of the Maryland State Board of Elections, Carlos Ayala, has resigned after being arrested by the FBI for participating in the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. Ayala was charged with civil disorder and related misdemeanor charges, and subsequently resigned from his position. His arrest has caused surprise and distress among Maryland officials, and the Maryland Republican Party has stated that Ayala chose to resign to prevent distraction from the 2024 elections process. Ayala was appointed to the board in 2023 and was seen on video footage participating in the riot, and more than 1,200 people have been charged with Capitol riot-related federal crimes.
