Maine Governor Mills Enacts Landmark Abortion Law, Expanding Access and Rights

Governor Janet Mills of Maine signed a historic law expanding access to abortions later in pregnancy, making it the strongest abortion rights legislation in the nation. The law permits women to obtain abortions later in pregnancy if deemed medically necessary by a licensed physician. Mills signed the law alongside supporters and lawmakers, including Dana Peirce, who inspired the legislation after having to travel out of state for an abortion due to a lethal fetal anomaly. The new law also includes provisions waiving insurance copays and deductibles for abortions. Opponents claim the law allows for abortion on demand through birth, but Mills argues that it is a reasonable and compassionate response to the failings of current abortion laws.
