Former North Carolina congressman Madison Cawthorn, who recently pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge, stated that there is no connection between the abundance of firearms in the United States and the proliferation of mass shootings. He used a recent mass shooting in Serbia, which has strict gun control laws, to illustrate his point. However, Serbia was flooded with hundreds of thousands of illegal weapons in the 1990s, and tens of thousands of people own legal firearms for hunting. Cawthorn was cited for bringing a gun to the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport and fined $250. He hopes to return to politics but is currently enjoying being out of it.
