Eric Garcetti Confirmed as US Ambassador to India Despite Controversy

The Senate confirmed Eric Garcetti, former Los Angeles Mayor, as the US Ambassador to India with a 52-42 vote. Despite losing the votes of three Democrats, seven Republicans crossed the aisle to support him. Garcetti's nomination was nearly derailed by questions about whether he knew about a former top aide's alleged sexual harassment of colleagues. The U.S. Embassy in India has been without an ambassador since January 2021, the longest stretch in the history of U.S.-India relations that the post has sat vacant.
