Democrats Gain Advantage in Redrawing New York's House Districts

New York's top court has ordered the state's Independent Redistricting Commission to create new congressional maps ahead of the 2024 election cycle, following a 4-3 ruling. The commission failed to reach a consensus before the 2022 election, allowing the Democrat-controlled legislature to draw the map. However, the Court of Appeals struck down the map and appointed a "special master" to redraw the lines, resulting in Republicans winning five out of six competitive House races. With this latest ruling, the court is ordering the commission to take another shot at redistricting, aiming to remedy the constitutional deficiency in the process.
