Controversy Surrounds Obama's Comments on Muslim Rights in India

Indian leaders from the governing BJP party have criticized former US President Barack Obama for his recent remarks on the protection of minority rights in India. Obama said in an interview that India may "start pulling apart" if the rights of minorities, particularly Muslims, weren't protected. Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said she was "shocked" by Obama's comments, while defence minister Rajnath Singh said India has never discriminated against people on the basis of their religion. The BJP has been accused of not doing enough to protect minorities from violence and discrimination.
