Brandon Johnson, the current Cook County Commissioner, has been elected as the next mayor of Chicago, beating out Paul Vallas in a runoff election. Johnson, a former CPS teacher and union organizer, received significant backing from unions such as the CTU, American Federation of Teachers, and SEIU. His campaign focused on eliminating Cook County's gang database and combating housing discrimination in Chicago. Johnson and Vallas advanced to the runoff after the February election, in which incumbent Mayor Lori Lightfoot lost reelection.
