"California Governor proposes 28th Amendment to limit gun access"

California Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a new "28th Amendment" to the US Constitution that would restrict gun ownership rights, including universal background checks, raising the firearm purchase age to 21, instituting a waiting period, and banning the civilian purchase of "assault weapons." Newsom claims his proposal respects "America's gun-owning tradition" and has garnered bipartisan support. However, the proposal would require a constitutional convention or approval by two-thirds of the House and Senate, as well as at least 38 state legislatures. The National Rifle Association criticized Newsom's push, calling it a "publicity stunt."
