The object's resemblance to a foreign-government owned surveillance balloon has raised concerns. Last year, a Chinese spy balloon transited across the US, leading to increased radar surveillance and shootdowns of unidentified high-altitude objects. The Chinese balloon did not collect intelligence while over the US but used an American internet service provider to send data related to navigation and location back to China.
