Suicide deaths in the United States reached a record high in 2022, with at least 49,449 lives lost due to intentional self-harm, marking the highest number since 1941. While rates among children and young adults showed signs of improvement, with a decrease in suicide rates for ages 10 to 14 and 15 to 24, rates increased for other age groups. Men were four times more likely than women to die by suicide, but the suicide rate increased significantly for women, particularly among White women and those aged 25 to 34. Gun suicides also reached a record high, with more than half of suicides involving firearms. The implementation of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline has provided support, but more awareness, training, and resources are needed to better assist those in need.
