California's Newly Formed Committee Takes on Soaring Retail Theft

California lawmakers have formed a committee to address the increasing problem of retail theft in the state. The committee aims to come up with solutions ahead of the upcoming legislative session and has invited the Legislative Analyst Office and the Public Policy Institute to present an overview of current retail theft trends. A recent report from the Public Policy Institute of California revealed an 11% increase in commercial burglaries and a 29% increase in commercial robberies in Sacramento County between 2019 and 2022. However, the exact percentage of thefts remains difficult to determine due to underreporting.
