Newark Ship Fire Under Control, Coast Guard Reports

Emergency workers have contained the fatal fire on the cargo ship Grande Costa d'Avorio at Port Newark, New Jersey, to its 11th deck and reduced the risk of capsizing. The fire is no longer spreading, but it continues to burn. The ship is carrying 1,200 vehicles, some filled with gasoline and oil, and preventing it from capsizing is crucial to avoid an environmental disaster. Air and water monitoring resources are being deployed, and responders are draining water from the lower decks to stabilize the vessel. Funeral services for the two firefighters who died in the blaze will be held this week.
