Population Shifts: Which Counties Are Growing and Which Are Shrinking?

New Jersey's population declined by over 6,250 residents between July 2021 and July 2022, with outmigration in North Jersey being a major factor. While 11 of the state's 21 counties saw population growth, the largest counties in the northern part of the state saw significant net migratory declines. The National Association of Realtors reports that residents are leaving major population centers for less dense and more affordable areas, with Florida, Texas, and the Carolinas taking on the most domestic migrants in 2022.
