A California restaurant chain, Taqueria Garibaldi, allegedly hired a fake priest to take confessions from workers, asking them if they had been late for work or had stolen from their employer, according to the US Department of Labor. The restaurant's owner, Che Garibaldi, was also accused of denying overtime pay to workers, paying managers from customer tips, and threatening workers with retaliation and "adverse immigration consequences" for working with the agency. The Labor Department ordered the owners to pay $140,000 in back wages and damages to 35 employees.
