Surviving Cancer While Pursuing Higher Education

The author's mother was diagnosed with cancer a month before they left for college. Initially struggling to connect with peers, they turned to unhealthy coping mechanisms before finding solace in nature and academic projects. Eventually, they opened up to friends who provided a chosen family and taught them about vulnerability and connection. The author is grateful for the time they had with their mother and the lessons cancer taught them.
