A new species of tiny deer, Pudella carlae, has been discovered in the central Andes in Peru, marking the first new cervid species found in South America in over 60 years. This new species, which is part of the pudu group, is named after biologist Carla Gazzolo and is thought to live exclusively in the dry valleys of Peru’s Huancabamba Depression. The discovery also resurrects the Pudella genus and brings about the reclassification of the Northern pudu. P. carlae is distinct from its relatives in terms of size and color pattern, and the researchers aim to further investigate its origins.
