Understanding the Pregnancy Risk of Ozempic and Wegovy

Ozempic and Wegovy, two semaglutide-containing medications used for type 2 diabetes control and weight loss, respectively, could pose a serious risk to unborn babies, according to animal studies. Pregnant rabbits, rats, and monkeys given semaglutide experienced higher rates of miscarriage, birth defects, and small fetal size. Doctors advise patients to stop taking semaglutide-containing medications in the months leading up to pregnancy. The FDA is requiring Novo Nordisk to conduct an investigation based on reports from women who have experienced miscarriage or other pregnancy issues while taking these medications.
