Doctor's Sick Revenge on Spurned Lover: A Justice Story

Dr. Richard Schmidt, a gastroenterologist, injected his former lover, Janice Trahan, with blood from an AIDS patient, infecting her with the virus that causes the disease. Schmidt had been Trahan's lover for a decade, but she broke off the relationship and started dating other men. Schmidt was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison based on circumstantial evidence and genetic testing that showed a one-in-a-million chance that Trahan's infection could have come from anyone other than Schmidt's patient. Schmidt died in prison in March of this year.
