Humane Societies Face Challenges Amid Contagious Illnesses and Shelter Needs

The San Diego Humane Society has temporarily halted owner surrenders of dogs, except in emergencies, due to the presence of two highly contagious diseases: Streptococcus Equi subspecies Zooepidemicus (Strep zoo) and Mycoplasma. The combination of these illnesses has resulted in more severe disease. The organization is operating over capacity and will limit dog intake to strays, waive fees for lost dog reclaims and adoptions, and encourage temporary fostering.
