Record Labels Sue AI Company Anthropic for Unauthorized Distribution of Song Lyrics

Universal Music Group and other music publishers have filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence company Anthropic for distributing copyrighted song lyrics through its AI model, Claude 2. The complaint alleges that Claude 2 generates lyrics that are nearly identical to existing songs and uses phrases similar to copyrighted lyrics without permission. The music publishers argue that Anthropic fails to properly license and credit the copyrighted works, unlike other lyric distribution platforms. The plaintiffs also claim that Anthropic used copyrighted material to train its language models. Copyright infringement in generative AI has become a contentious issue, and the music industry is seeking ways to protect its rights while harnessing the technology.
