"María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Other Artists Receive MacArthur 'Genius' Awards"

María Magdalena Campos-Pons is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores memory, spirituality, and identity in relation to personal and collective histories in the Caribbean. Through photography, performance, sculpture, drawing, painting, and video, Campos-Pons creates richly layered installations that address issues of displacement and inequality. Her works often reference the trans-Atlantic slave trade, rituals lost to history, and her own experiences as a Cuban woman. She also establishes platforms for other artists through her organization, the Engine for Art, Democracy & Justice. Campos-Pons's work has been exhibited internationally and she currently serves as a professor at Vanderbilt University.
