Oakland Airport Explores Adding 'San Francisco Bay' to Name for Growth

The Port of Oakland is considering changing the name of the Oakland airport to "San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport" in an effort to increase awareness of its Bay Area location and attract more direct flights, especially international routes. Officials believe that the current lack of geographic awareness has hindered the airport's route performance and are hopeful that the name change will lead to increased success in new markets. Airlines, including Southwest, are supportive of the rebranding, and if approved by the Port Commission, the airport staff will work to formally rename the airport while keeping the three-letter airport code, OAK, and visual brand unchanged.
