Meta's Updated Rules for Political Advertising in the 2024 Election

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has announced updated policies on political advertising, requiring advertisers to disclose the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to alter images and videos in certain political ads. The new rules apply to photorealistic AI-generated content that depicts real people saying or doing things they did not, as well as content that depicts realistic-looking events that did not happen. Meta will also block new political, electoral, and social issue ads during the final week of US elections, lifting the restrictions the day after the election. The move comes as the use of AI technologies in misleading ads poses a new challenge for the social networking giant, which has faced criticism in the past for failing to address misinformation on its platforms.
