Independent U.S. lab Valisure detected high levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene in acne treatments from brands including Clinique, Clearasil, and Target's Up & Up, prompting a petition to the FDA for product recalls and investigation. The presence of benzene in these products, including Proactiv and Walmart's Equate Beauty, was attributed to benzoyl peroxide itself, with some products forming over 800 times the FDA concentration limit for benzene. While Estee Lauder and Reckitt Benckiser defended the safety of their products, the FDA has yet to respond to the petition, raising concerns about consumer safety in acne treatment products.
