US Launches Investigation into Hyundai and Kia Recall of 6.4 Million Vehicles over Fire Risks

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into 16 separate recalls by Hyundai and Kia, covering 6.4 million vehicles, due to brake fluid leaks that could potentially lead to fires. The NHTSA aims to evaluate the timeliness of the automakers' defect decision-making and adherence to reporting requirements. Hyundai and Kia have issued multiple recalls since 2016 for antilock braking system (ABS) and Hydraulic Electronic Control Units (HECU) issues. The automakers have reported incidents of fires and melting due to internal brake fluid leaks causing electrical shorts. In 2020, Hyundai and Kia agreed to pay a record $210 million civil penalty for failing to recall vehicles for engine issues in a timely manner.
