2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 SUVs plagued by power issues, says highway safety agency.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received 30 complaints from US owners of Hyundai's Ioniq 5 electric SUV about losing propulsive power, many after hearing a loud popping noise. The NHTSA has opened a preliminary investigation, estimating that 39,500 2022 models are on US highways. Hyundai will offer a software update and replace affected components if necessary. The company said a power surge was damaging transistors, preventing vehicles' 12-volt battery from recharging. Technical problems accompanying automakers' growing global rollout of electric vehicles have included battery recalls due to the potential for fires.
