The Navy and Justice Department have announced an expedited settlement offer, called the Elective Option, to victims of water contamination at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Over 93,000 people have filed claims seeking compensation for diseases caused by exposure to toxic water at the Marine Corps Base. The Elective Option allows qualifying claimants to receive a payout ranging from $150,000 to $450,000, with an additional $100,000 for exposure-related deaths. The Navy and DOJ will contact eligible claimants, who will have 60 days to decide whether to accept the offer or continue pursuing a larger settlement. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that up to 900,000 service members were potentially exposed to the contaminated water, which has been linked to various deadly diseases.
