Canada Implements Two-Year Cap on International Student Admissions

Canada has announced a 35% reduction in international student admissions for 2024, capping approved study permits at 360,000 compared to around 900,000 in 2023, as a response to the housing crisis. The cap is a temporary policy for two years and exempts students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees. Provinces will distribute the allocated number of international student admissions among various institutions, and a new attestation requirement from Canadian provinces or territories is effective from January 22, 2024. Additionally, there are changes to post-graduate work permits, spousal open work permits, and increased cost-of-living requirements for international students. The diplomatic row between India and Canada has also impacted the number of Indian students applying for Canadian universities.
