Wild On Ice euthanized after Kentucky Derby training injury.

Wild On Ice, the reigning Sunland Derby winner, was euthanized after suffering a hind leg injury while training for the Kentucky Derby. The injury occurred just before 6 a.m. after racing five furlongs in 1:01.40. The owner, Frank Sumpter, said euthanasia was the best option because "so much could go wrong" with the type of injury that was sustained. Wild On Ice was tied for 15th in the Derby standings and was in position to become the first Texas-bred horse to win the Kentucky Derby since 1950. Skinner will replace Wild On Ice in the 20-horse field.

Kentucky Derby contender Wild on Ice had to be euthanized after fracturing a bone in his left hock during a morning workout at Churchill Downs. The three-year-old gelding was a long shot in the Derby field at 60-1 and carried with him a great story, as his jockey Ken Tohill would have been the oldest jockey in Derby history. Skinner will now be added to the field after Wild on Ice's withdrawal.

Kentucky Derby contender Wild On Ice euthanized after training injury.

Wild On Ice, a contender for the Kentucky Derby, was euthanized after suffering a hind leg fracture during training at Churchill Downs. The Texas-bred gelding had won the Grade 3 Sunland Park Derby at 35-1 odds on March 26 and was set to be ridden by the oldest jockey in Kentucky Derby history. With Wild On Ice out, Skinner moves into the Kentucky Derby field at No. 20 on the points list. Cyclone Mischief, third in the Grade 1 Florida Derby, now ranks No. 21 on the points list and will need one defection to get into the Kentucky Derby.

"Wild On Ice Stuns in Sunland Park Derby Upset"

Texas-bred Wild On Ice, ridden by 60-year-old jockey Ken Tohill, pulled off a major upset in the Sunland Park Derby, winning by 1 1/4 lengths with odds of 35-1. The victory earned Wild On Ice an automatic berth to run in the Kentucky Derby, provided the breeder-owner and trainer pay the $6,000 nomination fee. This was Tohill's first graded-stakes victory, and the $356,400 purse money earned by Wild On Ice was better than any of the top six career earners on Tohill’s résumé.
