Mosquitoes in Wichita Falls carry SLE Virus

Mosquitoes collected from traps in Wichita Falls, specifically in mosquito zone 13, have tested positive for Saint Louis Encephalitis (SLE). The Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District's routine mosquito surveillance program identified the presence of certain mosquito species capable of spreading diseases. No human cases of SLE have been reported, but individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms after a mosquito bite are advised to contact healthcare providers. The Health District recommends following the Four D's to reduce the risk of infection: Dump/Drain standing water, use Deet insect repellent, Dress appropriately, and avoid outdoor activities during Dusk/Dawn. The Health District will continue mosquito control measures, including testing mosquitoes, treating standing water, and spraying when conditions permit.

Rabies Outbreak: Multiple Positive Cases Found in Wichita Falls

A pet dog in Wichita Falls, Texas, was found playing with a rabid bat, marking the second positive case of rabies in the city this year. The dog will be isolated as required by state law. City officials advise residents to avoid contact with wild animals, particularly bats, raccoons, skunks, coyotes, and foxes, as they are the primary carriers of rabies in the state. To reduce the risk of infection, pet owners are urged to keep their animals vaccinated and away from wild animals. Residents are also encouraged to securely cover garbage cans and avoid activities that attract wild animals to neighborhoods. In case of a bite or scratch from an unfamiliar or wild animal, individuals should seek immediate assistance from a physician or the local health district.
