Vaughan Gething Makes History as Wales' First Black National Leader
Vaughan Gething has been elected as the first Black leader of Wales' semi-autonomous government, narrowly beating Education Minister Jeremy Miles in the Welsh Labour Party leadership contest. Once confirmed by the Welsh parliament, Gething will become the fifth first minister since Wales' national legislature was established in 1999, and the first Black leader of a government in the U.K. and by some definitions, of any European country. Gething, who is of Welsh and Zambian descent, will take over a government often at odds with the Conservative administration in London and facing challenges such as the fallout from Tata Steel's plan to close blast furnaces.
