Outbreak of Horse/Cattle Disease Hits Mother Lode

A case of vesicular stomatitis (VS), a viral disease that primarily affects horses and cattle but can also impact other animals, has been confirmed in the Mother Lode region. Humans can also become infected when handling affected animals. The disease is spread through direct contact with infected animals, contaminated materials, and insect bites. Animal owners are advised to practice good biosecurity measures and isolate new horses when introduced to the herd. Symptoms include blister-like lesions, fever, drooling, reluctance to eat, and lameness. Owners should contact a veterinarian if signs of the disease are observed.
