Africa shines at Venice Architecture Biennale with Golden Lion win and powerful displays.

DAAR and Brazil have won Golden Lions at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale for the best project on show and pavilion respectively. DAAR won the award for best participant in The Laboratory of the Future exhibition, while Brazil was awarded the Golden Lion for best National Participation for its pavilion named Terra. The winners were selected by a jury made up of architects and curators.

Africa's Colonial Legacy Highlighted at Venice Architecture Biennale.

The Venice Architecture Biennale has put Africa in the spotlight for the first time, exploring the toxic landscapes and social scars that riddle the continent’s postcolonial lands, while also offering a glimpse of more hopeful futures brewing among the youthful population. The exhibition features a majority of exhibitors from Africa, or the diaspora, a 50-50 gender balance, and an average age of 43. The exhibition explores topics such as decarbonisation, resource extraction, and identity, among others. The exhibition is a necessary corrective to mainstream architectural culture, which has long overlooked these topics.

Innovative Solutions at Venice Architecture Biennale.

The Estonian pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale is a rental apartment with a live-in actor who is performing daily rituals to explore the challenges of home ownership. The exhibition, titled Home Stage, challenges the contradiction of a home being both a living space and a piece of real estate. Different actors will each spend a month living in the apartment and performing to visitors. The apartment also contains a series of installations that pose different questions about the housing market, from an empty room to a bathroom fountain.
