Parents' Battle for Terminally Ill UK Baby's Life Extends Lifeline to Vatican Hospital
An 8-month-old terminally ill baby in the UK has been granted more time to live as her parents fight a judge's mandate to remove her from life support. The baby suffers from a degenerative mitochondrial disease, and her parents have appealed the decision in order to seek continued treatment overseas. They have made arrangements with the Vatican's Bambino Gesù hospital in Rome for her care and have secured Italian citizenship for her. The Court of Appeals will hear their case in November, and until then, the baby cannot be taken off life support. The Italian government has also pressed the UK courts to hand over custody of the child.
