Legacy Automakers Respond to UAW Strike with Significant Pay Raises

Honda will implement an 11% pay raise for non-exempt production associates at its U.S. facilities, including the Indiana Auto Plant in Greensburg, starting from January 8, 2024. The wage increase is a response to staying competitive in the auto manufacturing market and comes after the United Auto Workers' historic contracts with Honda's unionized Detroit-based competitors.

General Motors (GM) plans to invest approximately $13 billion in U.S. facilities by April 2028, according to a tentative agreement with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union. The investments include new electric vehicle plants, assembly plants, engine and components plants, and more. The details of the agreement, which also include pay increases and enhanced benefits for autoworkers, must still be ratified by the union's members. GM's investments are lower compared to Ford and Stellantis, but they do not include previously announced investments in battery cell plants. The UAW intends to leverage these record contracts to unionize other automakers.
