Microsoft Implements Ban on Unauthorized Xbox Accessories, Sparking Concerns for Accessibility and Gaming Community

Microsoft has implemented a system-level ban on "unauthorized" accessories for Xbox consoles, likely in an effort to combat cheating. However, this crackdown is also affecting legitimate users who rely on adapters for accessibility and fighting game hardware. The ban blocks the use of non-Microsoft or non-licensed accessories, and users have two weeks to return the accessory before it is permanently blocked. While the ban may help combat cheating, it also limits the use of certain controllers in single-player games and poses challenges for accessibility users who rely on third-party accessories.

Xbox's New Policy: Official Accessories Only, Third-Party Controllers Banned?

Microsoft will no longer allow unauthorized third-party accessories to be used with Xbox consoles starting from November 12, 2023. Players are receiving a warning message, "error 0x82d60002," when plugging in unauthorized accessories, informing them that their accessories will be blocked. Xbox advises returning the accessory and referring to its list of authorized products. This policy change is causing issues for brands like Brook Gaming and has been affecting various third-party accessories since the latest console build. Officially licensed products from third-party manufacturers will remain unaffected.
