UMass Boston Reports Active Tuberculosis Case on Campus
A person at UMass Boston has been diagnosed with active tuberculosis (TB), with approximately 39 people on campus identified as possibly being exposed. University Health Services Director Robert Pomales stated that the general UMass Boston community is not at an increased risk, and those potentially exposed have been contacted about protective measures. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs and can be fatal if not treated properly. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, speaks, or sings, but it is not easily transmitted between individuals. UMass Boston requires tuberculosis screening for all students and testing for international students from high-risk countries.
