Turkish MP Dies After Heart Attack During Controversial Parliament Speech
Hasan Bitmez, a Turkish opposition legislator, has died in a hospital in Ankara two days after suffering a heart attack during a speech in parliament criticizing the government's policy towards Israel. Bitmez accused President Erdogan's Justice and Development Party of being complicit with Israel and called for an end to friendly economic relations. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, Bitmez collapsed at the lectern. Erdogan has sought to improve ties with Israel while also condemning the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Bitmez's coffin was draped with a Turkish flag and a small Palestinian flag in a ceremony at the Grand National Assembly.
