100 Years Ago: A Look Inside the First Round-the-World Passenger Cruise.

The world's first continuous passenger cruise ship, the SS Laconia, completed a 130-day voyage 100 years ago, paving the way for modern world cruises. The Phelps sisters, who were traveling with their mother, kept travel logs, collected souvenirs, and took photographs during the voyage. The Laconia offered a luxurious experience, setting a new bar for travel for those with means. The Phelps sisters' Laconia collection, including their travel diaries, photographs, slides, and film footage, is owned by the University of South Carolina's Moving Image Research Collections.
