DeSantis Allocates Funds for Transportation, Insurance, and Combating Antisemitism in Florida Budget

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed using the more than $570 million collected from the Hillsborough transportation sales tax, which was overturned by the Florida Supreme Court, for transportation projects in Hillsborough County instead of issuing a tax refund. The governor's proposed budget includes a directive for the funds to be sent to the Florida Department of Transportation, who will have until September to determine which projects to allocate the money to. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor expressed support for the proposal, stating that the city has significant transportation needs. The details of the plan are still being worked out, including whether mass transit will be included in the project prioritization.

Arizona Governor to Veto Republican-Backed Transportation Sales Tax Proposal

Governor Katie Hobbs of Arizona will veto a proposal by Senate Republicans to extend a sales tax that funds transportation projects in Maricopa County. The half-cent sales tax has been in place since 1985 and is set to expire on Dec. 31, 2025. Hobbs recently unveiled a plan where 40% of the tax revenue would go to freeways, 22% for arterial roads, and 38% for transit projects like buses. However, Republican’s plans are different than the governor. Republicans are looking to lower the overall half-cent sales tax, increase freeway allocation to 46% and prohibit light rail expansion.
