New Jersey's E-ZPass program will move from windshield-mounted transponders to digital sticker tags embedded with chips; the switch is in early planning with no firm date, though officials have suggested stickers could begin appearing by the end of 2026. The Illinois Tollway is phasing out the I-Pass transponder and introducing new sticker tags for toll collection, which use passive radio frequency identification technology and do not require a battery. Sticker tags are available for purchase at tollway oases, customer service centers, and Jewel-Osco locations, and do not require a deposit. The $10 deposit for hard-case transponders will be transferred to the toll account balance once a sticker tag is registered. Drivers with hard-case transponders can continue using them until they expire, and the stickers can be used as soon as they're registered to an I-Pass account.
Illinois Tollway commuters can now obtain new I-PASS stickers to replace the previous transponders, available for free at customer service centers or online, and for a retail service fee at select stores. The $10 transponder deposit will be transferred to prepaid toll account balances. Sticker tags are non-transferable, require no batteries, and can be immediately used on the Illinois Tollway and within 24 hours on the Chicago Skyway or other EZ-Pass roadways once registered to an I-PASS account.
