Forced labor linked to cyber scams on the rise, says US State Department report.

The US State Department has identified a "rapidly growing and troubling trend" of forced labor linked to cyber scams, particularly in Southeast Asia, as it launched its annual human trafficking report. The report also highlights that men and boys can be victims of trafficking and may not always be recognized as such. The report identifies which governments around the world are meeting the minimum standards to eliminate human trafficking and which have failed in their efforts to combat it. 24 countries, including Russia, China, Afghanistan, Syria, and North Korea, are listed in Tier 3 for failing to meet the minimum standards.

Massive Rescue Operations Save Over 1,000 Trafficking Victims in Southeast Asia

Over 1,000 trafficking victims were rescued in separate operations in Southeast Asia, with 20 Indonesians freed from a cyber scam in Myanmar and 170 Indonesians rescued in the Philippines. The victims were promised high-paying jobs in Thailand but were instead forced to work for a fake cyber industry. The victims were from Hong Kong, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Myanmar, and the Philippines. The Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok will work with Thai authorities to repatriate the victims to Indonesia.
